Snapshot
Prairie Athletic Club in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; Gold’s Gym Khalda in Amman, Jordan; and Ironberg Brasília in the Federal District of Brazil are all unusually large fitness destinations, but they are not directly equivalent. Prairie is a long-established private athletic and family-recreation club. Gold’s Khalda is a six-storey urban franchise flagship. Ironberg Brasília is a recently opened, bodybuilding-led training centre in a converted big-box building.

Location and physical setting
Prairie Athletic Club occupies its main site at 1010 North Bird Street in Sun Prairie, northeast of Madison. The setting is suburban but not simply a big-box retail district: residential subdivisions and local parks surround much of the Bird Street area, while US Highway 151 and Sun Prairie’s larger commercial corridors remain accessible nearby. The landscape and low-rise development pattern reflect the city’s expansion across former agricultural land. Sun Prairie has cold, snowy winters and warm summers, making PAC’s combination of indoor facilities and seasonal outdoor recreation especially significant.
Gold’s Gym Khalda stands on Al-Aayan Street in Khalda, an established western Amman district with housing, shops and other urban services. It is near City Mall but occupies its own gym building rather than forming part of the mall. Its six-storey form responds to a denser urban context than Prairie’s campus-style facility. Amman’s hot, dry summers and cool winters place a premium on controlled indoor environments, although Gold’s Khalda also advertises outdoor fitness space; it is not an entirely indoor facility.
Ironberg Brasília is located at QS 3 in the Areal area, beside Taguatinga Shopping, in a zone variously described by businesses and mapping services as Águas Claras or Taguatinga. This boundary location differs from the tower-lined core of Águas Claras. The immediate setting is a large-format commercial corridor containing shopping, educational and service uses. Ironberg occupies the former Leroy Merlin premises, so the project is an adaptation of an existing retail building rather than a purpose-built new structure.
Origins and spatial development
Prairie Athletic Club dates to 1976. Its present scale is the result of repeated additions over several decades, including indoor courts and pools, fitness spaces, and the outdoor Dolphins Cove and Adventure Lagoon water attractions. The main athletic club remains centred on North Bird Street, although PAC also provides a separate PAC24 adult workout facility in the Liberty Square building and operates Prairie Pines Golf Club. It is therefore more accurate to describe the Bird Street complex as PAC’s principal club than to call the wider operation strictly single-site.
Gold’s Gym entered Jordan in 2017 with the Khalda club. Contemporary industry reporting described the 14,000 m² facility as the largest Gold’s Gym opened at that time, while Gold’s Gym Jordan identifies it as the winner of the 2017 Best New International Gym award. A second Amman club opened in Abdoun in December 2019, establishing Khalda as the first and larger of two Jordan locations rather than the chain’s only local experiment.
Ironberg developed from a Brazilian training-centre concept launched by former Bluefit executive Roberto Rautenberg in 2021. The brand expanded to several Brazilian cities before entering the Federal District in 2026. Ironberg Brasília opened to the public in July 2026, making it too new to have the long operating history available for Prairie or Gold’s Khalda. The Brasília project represents both geographic expansion and a further enlargement of Ironberg’s bodybuilding-oriented format.
Scale, spatial form and land use
Prairie reports the largest published area of the three and is the most campus-like, although its “facilities” measurement is not directly comparable with the other area figures. Its main complex is predominantly low-rise and spreads different activities horizontally. Indoor recreation, fitness, childcare and food-and-beverage functions are supplemented by substantial outdoor aquatic and leisure areas. PAC’s description of itself as Wisconsin’s largest health or recreational fitness club is an operator and local-tourism claim rather than an independently audited statewide category.
Gold’s Khalda concentrates 14,000 m² vertically across six floors. This produces the clearest urban building type in the comparison: a standalone commercial health club whose different activities are distributed through a multi-storey structure. The published sources confirm its overall size and facility list but do not provide enough evidence to assign every activity to a particular floor.
Ironberg Brasília occupies more than 11,000 m² in a converted large-format retail property. A project supplier describes a three-level complex, while the official imagery shows extensive open training areas; it should not be reduced to a single ground-level hall. Its 1,500-space parking provision and location beside a major shopping centre preserve the large-parcel, vehicle-oriented logic of the former retail use. Ironberg’s record claim should be tied to the category used in the reported certification, not treated as proof that its total premises exceed every other gym or athletic club.
Internal spatial organization
Prairie separates activities into a wide range of indoor and outdoor zones. Its verified indoor facilities include six basketball courts, one full-size indoor soccer field, a six-lane lap pool, a warm-water pool, a zero-depth family pool, running tracks, racquetball courts, group-exercise studios, strength areas and childcare facilities. Outside, Dolphins Cove and Adventure Lagoon add waterslides, a lazy river, a zipline, an aquatic climbing wall, deep-water recreation, sand volleyball and food-and-drink areas including the Tiki Bar. Keeping these outdoor attractions distinct from the indoor club is important to understanding both the site’s size and its seasonal operation.
Gold’s Khalda combines four swimming pools, a Kids Club, Mind & Body, cycling and GGX studios, boxing, functional fitness, general cardio and strength training, an outdoor gym and three floors devoted to women’s training zones. The source material establishes this range but not the draft’s earlier claim that pools occupy the top floors and weight areas the lower floors. Its defining organizational feature is therefore not a verified top-to-bottom sequence but the separation of many programs—including extensive women-only provision—within one vertical building.
Ironberg Brasília is organized around large-scale strength and performance training. Its official site lists bodybuilding and strength training, cardio, Hyrox and indoor cycling, together with complete changing facilities and a social area. Launch reporting adds more than 500 Panatta machines, an exclusive women’s area and a major Hyrox arena. The official site now includes a virtual tour, so the Brasília unit can be described directly rather than reconstructed from sister clubs in other cities.
Disability, sensory and LGBTQ+ inclusion
Publicly available information does not support calling any of the three facilities comprehensively accessible or inclusive. A useful assessment has to separate wheelchair access, sensory accommodation and LGBTQ+ inclusion rather than infer them from general community language.
Prairie is listed by a third-party directory as wheelchair accessible, and its zero-depth pools, warm-water activities and Aqua Yoga provide some options for people with mobility or joint limitations. The club’s own public materials do not provide a complete access statement covering step-free routes, lifts, adapted toilets and showers, pool lifts, accessible equipment, assistance policies or evacuation procedures. These details should be confirmed directly before a visit.
Gold’s Khalda is listed by a third-party review directory as having a wheelchair-accessible entrance, parking and toilet. That is useful but remains less reliable than a current facility-issued access statement. No detailed information was found on lift dimensions, accessible showers, pool entry, equipment spacing or staff assistance.
Ironberg’s large premises and 24-hour schedule do not establish physical accessibility. The Brasília site advertises complete changing rooms and spacious environments but does not publish a detailed wheelchair-access statement identifying step-free circulation, lifts, adapted toilets or showers, accessible equipment or assistance procedures. Accessibility should therefore be recorded as unverified, not assumed from the building’s size or recent conversion.
None of the three facilities publishes identified quiet hours, low-sensory sessions, sensory maps, reduced-light or reduced-music periods, advance information for autistic visitors, or a stated neurodiversity accommodation process. Prairie’s multiple zones may offer some calmer spaces and Ironberg’s overnight opening may permit visits at less busy times, but neither is a guaranteed sensory accommodation. Ironberg’s immersive lighting, performance music and dense equipment environment may present barriers for some users. Gold’s crowd levels also appear to vary by time of day. Users who need predictable sound, lighting or occupancy should contact each facility before visiting.
No explicit LGBTQ+ or transgender inclusion policy was found for Prairie, Gold’s Khalda or Ironberg Brasília. None of the reviewed public materials explains gender-neutral changing options, trans access to gendered facilities, staff training, pronoun practices, same-sex household membership or a specific anti-harassment process. Gold’s women-only floors and Ironberg’s women-only area address gender separation and privacy, but they are not evidence of LGBTQ+ inclusion.
The Jordanian context is particularly important when assessing Gold’s Khalda. Jordan does not explicitly criminalize consensual same-sex relations, but it has no law prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Human-rights reporting states that vague “immorality” provisions and cybercrime rules have been used to harass or target LGBTQ+ people and activists. Public same-sex affection and gender nonconformity may also attract harassment. This does not establish that Gold’s Khalda itself discriminates. It means that a generic promise to serve a broad clientele cannot be treated as evidence of LGBTQ+ safety, and the absence of a specific club policy, confidential complaint route and clear changing-room guidance is more consequential in this setting.
For all three facilities, the absence of a published policy should be recorded as undocumented rather than negative or confirmed. National law and social conditions provide necessary context, but they do not substitute for evidence about the conduct of an individual gym.
Relationship with surrounding land uses
Prairie functions as a regional recreation destination embedded near suburban neighborhoods. Its scale draws users from beyond walking distance, but its immediate relationship is not only with highway retail: houses, schools and parks are also part of the surrounding urban fabric. Gold’s Khalda has the closest relationship with a continuous mixed-use city district, placing a large branded fitness facility near housing and commercial services. Ironberg sits in a metropolitan commercial node beside Taguatinga Shopping, where a former home-improvement store has been converted from retail to fitness use.
These relationships produce three distinct place types: a suburban recreation campus, a vertical urban club and an adapted metropolitan big-box training centre.
Access and movement
Prairie is readily reached by car. Public transport exists but is limited in frequency and span compared with an urban high-frequency network. Madison Metro’s weekday Route W serves Bird Street, with a timed stop at Windsor Street and Bird Street, and connects through the Sun Prairie Park and Ride. The club is therefore transit-accessible in a limited sense, although the route pattern and suburban location make driving more convenient for many trips.
Gold’s Khalda is reached through Amman’s road-based transport system, including private cars, taxis and buses. Amman has no urban rail connection to Khalda. Available sources confirm the Al-Aayan Street address but do not provide enough reliable evidence to quantify the club’s parking capacity, bus frequency or member travel modes.
Ironberg strongly accommodates car access through its advertised 1,500 parking spaces, with three hours free for members. Local buses serve the Pistão Sul/Taguatinga Shopping corridor. The closest useful Metro station is Taguatinga Sul, reported at about a 30-minute walk from the former Leroy Merlin site; Águas Claras station is not a few blocks from the gym. Ironberg can therefore be described as reachable by public transport but predominantly designed around road access.
User and sensory environment
Prairie’s character changes by zone and season. Indoor courts and pools support year-round sport, while the outdoor waterpark creates a distinctly family-oriented summer environment. Slides, aquatic play, social decks and food service can make the outdoor areas lively and noisy, but that atmosphere should not be generalized to every part of the 250,000-plus-ft² club.
Gold’s Khalda presents a high-capacity commercial gym environment with pools, studios, strength areas and separate women’s facilities. Public reviews indicate that experiences vary by time of day: some users value the scale and program range, while others report crowding or maintenance concerns. These reports support a mixed and time-dependent picture, not a single claim that the club is uniformly polished, quiet or congested.
Ironberg’s official imagery and virtual tour show high ceilings, dense arrays of strength equipment, dramatic lighting and strong performance branding. These visual characteristics support a bodybuilding-led identity. The operator also emphasizes social belonging and accessibility to different experience levels, but this remains a brand promise rather than established independent evidence about everyday community life. Because the club opened only in July 2026, its long-term atmosphere and operating patterns are not yet well documented.
Environmental conditions and resilience
The three clubs face different climatic operating conditions, but public evidence about building performance is limited. Prairie must support winter heating, snow management and summer cooling, while its outdoor waterpark is explicitly weather-dependent and seasonal. Gold’s Khalda operates multiple pools in Amman’s dry climate, making water and energy performance relevant, but no verified site-specific efficiency or resilience measures were found. Ironberg Brasília operates continuously through the region’s wet and dry seasons, yet no reliable public information was found on solar power, backup generation, drainage strategy or environmental certification.
The defensible comparison is therefore about exposure and available evidence, not presumed engineering solutions. None of the three should be credited with particular resilience or sustainability measures without project documentation.
Social character and economic inclusion
Prairie offers programs for children, adults and seniors, along with childcare, swimming, team sports and family recreation. This breadth supports its multi-generational identity. It remains a private membership club, however, so program variety should not be equated automatically with economic accessibility.
Gold’s Khalda’s three women-only training floors and children’s facilities respond to privacy, family and cultural preferences within the Amman market. They demonstrate deliberate program separation, although the social effect of that separation cannot be determined from the facility list alone. No sufficiently current and comparable pricing evidence was found to assign its users confidently to a particular social class.
Ironberg markets the Brasília club to both beginners and experienced athletes. Its 24/7 schedule expands temporal access, and reporting identifies an exclusive women’s area. At the same time, its affordability and actual user mix are not documented well enough to support broader inclusion claims. Across all three cases, operator messaging describes intended audiences more reliably than it demonstrates who can and does participate.
Distinctive place identity and takeaway
Prairie Athletic Club derives its identity from longevity, a strong local association with Sun Prairie and the combination of serious fitness with family recreation. Its place character depends on accumulated expansion and on the unusual coexistence of courts, pools, childcare, dining and a seasonal waterpark.
Gold’s Gym Khalda expresses a different model: an international fitness brand adapted to a large, vertically organized Amman facility. Its scale, pools, studios and women-only floors distinguish it from a conventional branch, while its 2017 opening and subsequent awards form part of its flagship identity.
Ironberg Brasília is defined by adaptive reuse, concentrated training space and the spectacle of scale. Its bodybuilding heritage, Hyrox arena, equipment inventory and 24-hour operation create a performance-centred proposition. Its community identity and record status are prominent in launch marketing, but its everyday local role is still emerging.
Overall comparison
The three places are best understood as different large-format fitness typologies rather than contestants in one uncomplicated size ranking. Prairie is the broadest recreation ecosystem and the most deeply rooted local institution. Gold’s Khalda is the most vertical and programmatically segmented urban flagship. Ironberg Brasília is the newest and most explicitly performance-led training centre, created through conversion of a former retail building.
Their differences are supported by physical form, program mix and operating history. Stronger causal claims—such as saying that each design directly resulted from local market demand—would require member data, design briefs or operator research that is not presently available.
